Shalini Chauhan was shopping at Costco Wednesday when her phone pinged with more news from India. This time, she learned, it was her uncle, a man she loved and missed very much, who had died of COVID-19.
Recently, she said, she has learned of 15 such tragedies in just nine days. Each brings with it a wave of grief made worse by being so far away, unable to directly comfort family members and friends who simply cannot escape the relentless horror that has descended on many of India’s most-populous cities.
“At first, it was numbers, then it became, ‘oh, I know so and so’ and now it’s your auntie, it’s your uncle, it’s your friend,” Chauhan said. “At Costco, it just hit me, I was in tears because it’s such a helpless feeling.
