Guam could miss 80% vaccination goal; governor won t lift restrictions without reaching aim

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — Guam could miss its 80% adult vaccination goal by July 21 — unless many of the 4,727 individuals who have missed their second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine for weeks get fully vaccinated Tuesday, officials said. This comes as Guam reported its 143rd Covid-19-related death on Sunday night, involving a 75-year-old female who was vaccinated, with underlying health conditions. While I have promised the people of Guam that I will lift restrictions upon achieving Operation Liberate Guam, I am faced with the harsh reality that we may fall short of our aggressive goal, Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero said at a press conference.

Our View: We need to convince more on Guam to get vaccinated

Our View: We need to convince more on Guam to get vaccinated Pacific Daily News Our community must find ways to convince more people to get vaccinated for COVID-19. Guam is close to the governor’s goal of fully vaccinating 80% of adults by July 21. But the vaccination rate for CHamorus and the island’s FSM community is low. Last Thursday, Guam recorded its 141st COVID-19-related fatality. The 72-year woman, pronounced dead upon arrival at Guam Memorial Hospital, wasn’t vaccinated. All of Guam’s recent COVID-19-related deaths weren’t vaccinated. “As we work toward rebuilding Guam, we are reminded that the COVID-19 virus remains a threat to our community, most especially those who have yet to get vaccinated,” said Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero.

Vaccine rates lowest among CHamorus, regional migrants

Vaccine rates lowest among CHamorus, regional migrants By Steve Limtiaco Although the island’s overall vaccination rate is high, it’s very low among two ethnic groups CHamorus and people from the Federated States of Micronesia  said Dr. Hoa Nguyen, chairman of the governor’s Physicians Advisory Group. The island is nearing the governor’s goal of fully vaccinating 80% of adults by July 21, with more than 76% vaccinated. But Nguyen said the vaccination rate for CHamorus is only about 20%, and the vaccination rate for the island’s FSM community is “somewhere in the teens.” “Everyone is scratching their head right now on how to approach the (CHamoru) population,” Nguyen said.
