Our View: We must be ready when federal pandemic funds end Pacific Daily News Like the rest of the country, Guam still is working toward economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.  Full recovery won’t happen anytime soon for our island, however, until the visitor industry returns to some semblance of pre-pandemic normalcy. And, unfortunately, that day won’t be coming anytime soon.  But Guam has been able to survive the economic hardships caused by the coronavirus, thanks in large part to federal programs, grants and direct funding.  The Paycheck Protection Program allowed many businesses to keep operating and employing their workers. The Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program poured tens of millions of dollars into the island, helping those who lost their jobs due to COVID-19 pay their bills, put food on the table for their families and cover other costs.

Our View: Take advantage of free job training opportunities Pacific Daily News View Comments Guam’s workers were hit hard by the shutdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly those who work in the island’s hotel and restaurant industry.  Many had their hours dramatically reduced or lost their jobs, and those who qualify have had to rely on federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance. But that money expires in September, and the island’s tourism industry won’t recover any time in the near future.  Despite record unemployment on the island, there are opportunities for those looking to expand their skill sets by getting free training in a new career. 

Legislature has bipartisan priorities for American Rescue Plan money

View Comments The 36th Guam Legislature released a bipartisan list of priorities for the anticipated $664 million in American Rescue Plan funding May 7. It was signed by all 15 senators and addressed to Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero, who requested to meet with the Legislature May 11 to discuss policy priorities for the money.  A joint statement from Speaker Therese Terlaje and Minority Leader Chris Duenas stated that American Rescue Plan funds presented an opportunity to truly affect people s lives.  Outlined in the list are desired allocations towards the following areas: $68 million direct assistance to individuals and families affected by the pandemic; over $233 million to expand health care services;
