San Nicolas: Guam has opportunity for golden age moving forward

Del. Mike San Nicolas struck a note of hope for Guam s future during his congressional address on Monday, his first since the COVID-19 pandemic struck the island in March 2020. Much of the address focused on federal money and programs that his office had been working to secure. Gaps in federal funding were closing up through improved Earned Income Tax Credit Reimbursement, a larger pool of Medicaid funding and the inclusion of Compact of Free Association migrants in the program, he said.

Department of Youth Affairs hosts oratorical contest

The Department of Youth Affairs will host an oratorical contest at the Guam Congress Building in Hagåtña at 5:30 p.m. on March 29, according to a news release.
The theme for the contest is “We are in this together. Middle and high school students can join the competition.
The high school winner will serve as youth governor and the middle school winner will as youth lieutenant governor during the youth month virtual proclamation signing at 2 p.m. April 1, the release stated.

Governor s State of the Island Address set for March 8
After a year like no other before it, Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero will deliver her State of the Island Address March 8.
It ll be Leon Guerrero s third time delivering the speech in her term. Coming off a historic win as the island s first female governor, Leon Guerrero described the state of the island in 2019 as promising.
Last year, the governor proclaimed Guam to be stronger than ever and financially stable and highlighted the end to the dengue outbreak.
At the time of the last State of the Island address, on Feb. 24, 2020, Leon Guerrero also noted Guam was coronavirus free. Three weeks after that declaration, Leon Guerrero placed the island in a state of public health emergency and the next day the first three cases of COVID-19 were identified.
