Covid-19, Poverty, and Child Labor in Ghana, Nepal, and Uganda

Summary Before the Covid-19 pandemic, countries around the globe had made remarkable progress in reducing child labor. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), the number of children in child labor decreased by approximately 94 million between 2000 and 2016, representing a drop of 38 percent. But as the pandemic caused massive school closures and unprecedented loss of jobs and income for millions of families, many children have entered the workforce to help their families survive, while others have been forced to work longer hours or enter more precarious and exploitative situations. Some have become their families’ primary breadwinners after losing a caregiver to Covid-19. Some despair of ever going back to school.

World Report 2021: From Flight Logs to Homeschooling, Human Rights Watch Grapples with Covid s Challenges

Hugh Williamson A Human Rights Watch expert recently spent days on WhatsApp contacting relatives of two Kurdish men in a remote village in southeast Turkey, who were abducted and later lynched by soldiers. “At first, when I reached them, the relatives didn’t trust me. It took many hours building an understanding with them,” the colleague told me.  One reason why this work was so hard: Covid-19.  2020 was a tough year worldwide for businesses and nongovernmental organizations, as they strived to keep operations running and support staff during the pandemic. The same is true for Human Rights Watch, where, similar to other NGOs, donations fell during the pandemic. With 490 staff spread across 50 countries, we research and expose human rights abuses, to persuade governments to protect rights.
