LETHBRIDGE, ALTA. The past year was an unprecedented time for travel with the COVID-19 pandemic bringing widespread business closures and travel restrictions. It also had a previously unimagined impact on the tourism sector.
Tourism Lethbridge released their annual report on May 6 which confirmed it was a tough year for tourism in the city. Hotels and lodgings across Lethbridge took one of the largest hits due to a major decrease in travel. It has been devastating, said Shilpa Stocker, the Lethbridge Lodging Association s project manager. Obviously, as with other businesses, the impact has been significant. Our occupancy, I would say, has dropped on average about 60 per cent, and so when occupancy drops by 60 per cent it puts a downward pressure on rates.

The annual Reykjavík Winter Lights Festival opens today and continues through Sunday,
Morgunblaðið reports. Its format this year is different from that of previous years, due to COVID-19-related restrictions. Therefore, there will be no formal opening ceremony or crowded events, such as normally have been held at the city’s museums and swimming pools.
Instead, the winter lights walking path will be the main attraction. The map, which you can view here, shows the location of 23 light installations that will be projected onto buildings and windows, as well as alleys, between the hours of 6 pm and 9 pm every night of the festival. The path extends from Hallgrímskirkja church to Austurvöllur square and all the way to Reykjavík City Hall.

“Many Irish people who live and work abroad love coming home for Christmas but unfortunately for a lot of them that’s just not possible this year,” said the Lord Mayor. “With this initiative we’re taking Dublin to them, so they can see a little bit of home from wherever they are in the world. In addition, as part of the Winter Lights Festival, Dublin City Council have commissioned a short film of all the festival sites in the City.”
