Snuggled in at home with their tablets propped up, students from Nikki and Gillian Brown’s classes shared a Christmas movie together just before the holiday break, a divergence from the daily life of virtual learning that brought a sense of fun and holiday spirit as the Miser Brothers entertained. Watching “A Miser Brothers Christmas,” the virtual field trip by the mother-daughter duo highlighted a collaboration that calls upon their whole family to play a role in the students’ education. Nikki teaches second grade at Winchester Avenue School, while Gillian is a permanent substitute at Bunker Hill Elementary. “They had never seen that one. They’ve seen ‘They Year Without Santa Claus,’ the old claymation movies,” Gillian said. “One of my students actually gave me the idea, because she said she wanted to watch ‘The Year Without Santa Claus,’ because she liked the Miser Brothers’ song. The Discourse, 2020 A few weeks ago, I wrote about a sign that’s been cropping up around my neighborhood of late. A few days ago, I spotted a rejoinder. On the one hand, I tend to agree that slogans have a way of blunting the conversation. On the other hand, the beauty of a good slogan is its graceful unity; it’s constructed such that you can’t take issue with it without looking awkward. Ackchually, America was already great. Ackchually, all lives matter. Best to come up with your own pithy bit. You could even skip the sloganeering and proffer a pamphlet: another neighbor placed a pile of pages offering Perspective in their produce basket.
