CA Seeks Desegregation of California City with Low-Income Housing

20 May 2021 Piedmont, California, is a small suburb with a population of 10,667 surrounded by the gritty city of Oakland, population 425,097. Piedmont is almost exclusively zoned for single family dwellings and is home to prosperous businesses.  Activists and politicians are trying to end that distinction by forcing Piedmont to build “affordable housing” and increase density by allowing multi-family units. Spokane s housing crisis: Why it s happening and what could be done to end it Spokane County’s average rent prices increased 14% in the past year and 5% in the past month, according to Spokane’s Low-Income Housing Consortium. Author: Nicole Hernandez Updated: 11:51 AM PDT May 17, 2021 SPOKANE, Wash. Local experts are calling Spokane’s housing situation a crisis because of high prices and low vacancy rates. According to the Executive Director of Spokane’s Low-Income Housing Consortium, Ben Stuckart, apartment prices have increased 14% from 2020 to 2021. In just April of 2021, prices increased by 5%. Stuckart said the prices have forced the average Spokane resident to spend more than the recommended 33% of their monthly income on housing. The issue stems from a lack of rental properties for people moving to the area.
