The Day - How long before all sales are final at Crystal Mall? - News from southeastern Connecticut

Email Submit Waterford Last Sunday, Crystal Mall s interior was almost as quiet and sparsely populated as its parking lot. Macy’s recently had announced it would be closing its mall location, and placards denoting 25%, 40%, 50%, sometimes 60% off dotted the store and the clearance sale wasn t scheduled to start until the next day.  Families, couples, solo shoppers and the customary groups of high schoolers meandered around the mall in search of deals or, as some said, in an attempt to prevent boredom.  Many stores in the mall have adopted limited hours since the COVID-19 pandemic began, if not closed entirely, leaving the future of the mall in question.

Low-Income Housing Petition Presented to Pierce County Council

Submitted by Carol Colleran. At the first County Council meeting of the year January 5, 2021, the Petition to Pierce County Council Regarding Funding for Low-income Housing, sponsored by St. Leo Catholic Social Justice Commission and church, was presented. It was signed by over 300 citizens of Pierce County in support of the Council passing of a 1/10 th of 1% sales tax to supply much needed funds for housing and support services for the people experiencing homelessness. It is currently estimated that there are 6,000 people who nightly do not have housing in Pierce County, with approximately 12,000 over any 12-month period. With money raised by this tax, the county could leverage federal and philanthropic funds and involve nonprofit housing developers to build housing attainable for residents at low-income levels. It is likely there would be a net gain of revenue to the county as people with stable housing are healthier and can be stable employees and contributing citizens.

Great Barrington tackles mold, moisture at Housatonic housing complex

GREAT BARRINGTON — The town’s Housing Authority Commission Board is continuing to address long-standing moisture and mold problems at Flag Rock Village in Housatonic. The board voted unanimously Thursday to accept a $41,700 bid — its lowest — from Environmental Restoration LLC to remediate one of the units in the low-income complex after a complaint was filed last summer with the town’s Health Department, and the Board of Health ordered it fixed. The authority board also approved a suggestion by Chairman James Mercer to inspect all units at Flag Rock for moisture problems to get a baseline before the board insists that the existing air conditioners run continuously in the humid months.

Letters to the Editor 12/10/20

Guest Opinion: Bend Parks Fees and Low-Income Housing Editor s note: In a year that s been filled with ups and downs and everything seeming topsy turvy, we elected to focus our two-part Gift Guide on two things that most people could use a good dose of this year: First, Comfort. Second, Joy. The Joy portion comes in this week s edition, where we ve rounded up a (far-from-comprehensive) list of joyful gift options you can get locally, and even buy online. Courtesy Old Mill District The event will look different this year (what doesn t in 2020?!) but the annual menorah lighting at the Old Mill is still happening this year, and slated for Thursday Dec. 10 at 4:30pm. The ceremony takes place in the westside parking lot across the Deschutes River from the shops, near the Hampton Inn, where people can watch the menorah lighting from their cars. After the lighting,
