Community COVID-19 cases near school districts see slight increase

There has been a slight increase in the number of known COVID-19 infections per 10,000 school district residents in the past two weeks, with 179 districts in the state that are a part of a so-called “Red Zone”, a state health group said Thursday.

Thursday, January 7, 2021 Joan “Jo-Ann” Brewer Thompson passed away Jan. 2, 2021, at her home in Marked Tree at the age of 85. Joan was born Nov. 11, 1935 in Lepanto to parents Henry Ervin Brewer and Maddie Odell Moore Brewer. She is survived by her husband Bill Thompson; her two sons, Billy Thompson (Don May) of Memphis, Tenn., and Allan Thompson (Kevin Falk) of Kauai, Hawaii. She also leaves her sister, Mary Elizabeth Weeks of Bruce, Miss. Joan was born and raised in and around Marked Tree. She was one of 13 children of Ervin and Odell Brewer. She married Bill Thompson in 1960 and immediately began traveling around the U.S. and the world during his 20 year career as an officer in the Army. In addition to raising two sons, she was active in the Officers Wives’ Club serving on boards and as president. The number of school districts in Arkansas with 50 or more few known COVID-19 infections for every 10,000 district residents has fallen in the past two weeks, with 171 districts in the state being in a so-called red zone, according to a state health group.

JONESBORO — A social media post led to the arrest of a Poinsett County man police say “severely beat” a woman on Christmas. The victim’s family called for a welfare check after receiving a Snapchat message showing her injuries asking for help, according to the probable cause affidavit. When officers with the Jonesboro Police Department arrived at the woman’s home on Kathleen Street, she “was discovered motionless in the bathtub.” Jermey Burns, 27, of Marked Tree, barricaded himself in a bedroom with the bed holding the door shut. Burns was armed with a box cutter during his Friday arrest, documents indicate.
