Josh Heupel as Head Coach
The decision comes after Tennessee fired Jeremy Pruitt for cause on Jan. 18 amid an investigation into alleged recruiting violations. Tennessee lost seven of its last eight games to finish the 2020 season with a 3-7 record. In total, Pruitt finished his three-year tenure with a 16-19 (10-16 SEC) mark. Tennessee’s last 10-win season came with Phillip Fulmer as head coach in 2007, which was the last year the Vols won the SEC East.
Welcome to Rocky Top, @coachjoshheupel!
White then hired Heupel at UCF to replace Frost. Heupel, 42, led the Knights to a 28-8 record in three seasons. UCF finished fifth nationally in total offense in 2018, second in 2019 and second in 2020.

Matt Hayes, a writer for the SaturdayDownSouth.com website, was blistering in his view of what has been allowed to happen to the once-mighty University of Tennessee football program just hours after coach Jeremy Pruitt went down in flames on Monday. “I’ve got some harsh words for those in power at Tennessee, something they don’t want to hear but better embrace. It’s not the 1990s anymore. Tennessee will never be elite again,” Matt wrote.
“After yet another coach failed to make it work on Rocky Top,” Matt reasoned, “and Jeremy Pruitt was fired after 3 seasons and amid an NCAA investigation, it can no longer be denied: The days of Tennessee consistently winning big and competing at the highest level of college football are long gone.”
Nope. Not at all.
Monday afternoon athletic director Phil Fulmer “retired” as the University of Tennessee announced the termination of head football coach Jeremy Pruitt for cause after an internal investigation found the program committed a number of Level I and Level II recruiting violations. Based on Mark Stoops’ response, Tennessee’s cheating was a poorly kept secret.
“I gotta be careful in my response here,” Stoops said on Tuesday’s edition of Kentucky Sports Radio. “
Did I see it coming? Yes, I’m grateful it came. Does it surprise me? Not one bit.”
Stoops was being nice to the low-down Vols. Tennessee’s cheating might be the sloppiest in the history of college athletics. Dan Patrick shared that Tennessee assistant coaches, “put money into McDonald’s bags and gave them to the recruits when they came on campus… They weren’t even trying to hide it.”
