PANAMA CITY BEACH Mayor Mark Sheldon wants Panama City Beach to grow and prosper and an infusion of state money could help hasten development this year.
During a City Council meeting Thursday, he and the rest of the council approved a list of items for the city s lobbying team to present to the Florida Legislature in hopes of getting additional funding for future projects. The Legislature s 2021 regular session is scheduled to begin March 2. This agenda is aggressive and we re asking for a lot of things, but we re going to fight hard. It s what we do, Sheldon said. There s a lot of things there, but we ve never wavered from the fact that we need to do road work, (and) we need more expansion of roads.
PANAMA CITY BEACH Beach Utilities Director Mark Shaeffer said the city has many water, sewer and wastewater improvement projects in the works.
During a recent Panama City Beach City Council meeting, Shaeffer presented to councilmen the details for 21 utility projects, which he later added made up about 90% of what his department is currently working on. Of the projects, only one was already complete, with the rest set to wrap up this year or stretch across future fiscal years.
While construction will be a common theme this year on the Beach, he said that s not such a bad thing. The outlook for us is very busy, said Shaeffer, who added that his department has about a $37.5 million budget for capital improvements this fiscal year. It s a growing area, a very popular area (and that s) a good problem to have.
