City of Odessa breaks ground on new animal shelter

The new state-of-the-art shelter will have air conditioning, a surgery room and space for more animals. Author: Rachel Robinson Updated: 12:07 AM CDT July 24, 2021 ODESSA, Texas The City of Odessa broke ground on a new animal shelter on Friday. The shelter will be located right next to the city s current shelter and will be more equipped to keep up with the cities growing animal population. I hear from citizens constantly about again, the state of this shelter and the need for a new shelter, Chief of Police Michael Gerke said. The current shelter is 45 years old and doesn t have central air conditioning so fans and swamp coolers are used to keep the animals cool. The shelter has a smaller occupancy for animals so it s hard to keep up with the high demand of them.

Odessa City Council Lifts Mask Mandate

Odessa City Council Lifts Mask Mandate The day before the state lifted their mask mandate, Odessa city council voted on Tuesday to remove the mask mandate within the city. According to the Midland Reporter-Telegram, the council voted 6-1 to take away the mask mandate one day before the state of Texas removed their mask mandate and opened up all businesses to 100%. The one vote against was from City Council member Mari Willis who had this to say: “I think we’re very close to where we would like to be. I don’t think we’re there yet,” she said during the virtual meeting. “But I do applaud everyone who has played a part in helping to bring our numbers down. I’m proud of our community.”
