Federal public safety minister suspends sale of decommissioned RCMP vehicles by The Canadian Press Last Updated Jan 22, 2021 at 3:44 pm EDT OTTAWA Public Safety Minister Bill Blair has suspended the sale of decommissioned RCMP vehicles, two days after a man in Nova Scotia was arrested for allegedly impersonating an officer while driving a fake police car. The suspect’s 2013 Ford Taurus was a decommissioned police car and was allegedly altered to look like an unmarked police vehicle. The car was similar to the replica RCMP cruiser used by a gunman who killed 22 people in Nova Scotia during a 13-hour rampage on April 18-19.

Expert Panel to Make Recommendations on Teachers’ Pension Plan January 13, 2021 - 10:15 AM The province and Nova Scotia Teachers Union (NSTU) have appointed an independent three-person expert panel to recommend ways to protect and strengthen the Teachers’ Pension Plan. The plan has an unfunded liability of $1.5 billion and a funded ratio of 78.2 per cent as of Dec. 31, 2019. While there is no immediate risk the plan will be unable to meet its ongoing pension obligations, NSTU and the province, as joint parties of the plan, have a shared obligation to address the plan’s liability so teachers, like other public sector employees, have pension benefits that will provide financial stability during retirement.

  HALIFAX An independent three-person panel has been appointed to examine ways of strengthening the pension plan for Nova Scotia s teachers, which had a massive unfunded liability of $1.5 billion as of 2019. The province says while there is no immediate risk the plan will be unable to meet its pension obligations, it has a shared obligation with the Nova Scotia Teachers Union to address the liability issue. The teachers pension plan is one of the largest public sector plans in the province, with 32,647 members, including 13,705 retirees and survivors, 12,979 active members and 5,963 inactive members as of 2019. Agreed to in October, the panel is to consult with teachers and other plan members before submitting recommendations to make the plan fully funded by Dec. 31.
