Compounders called on to label feed with exact percentages

June 2, 2021 12:06 pm Feed compounders are being called on to label products with the exact percentage of ingredients and whether or not the product is Irish or imported. The Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) said that compounders have “switched back to using high-quality Irish grain this year, which is welcome as the price of imported GM maize increased”. “This is good for the tillage sector as grain stores have emptied for the 2021 harvest,” noted IFA grain chairperson Mark Browne. Browne also pointed out that, under statutory rules, all compound feed should, at a minimum, include a list of all the main constituents, with the name of each feed material displayed in descending order by weight.

IFA calls for proper labelling of livestock rations

SHARING OPTIONS: Increasing the amount of information provided on feed labels would allow farmers to make more informed decisions stated the IFA grain chair. \ Philip Doyle IFA grain committee chair Mark Browne has stated that the exact percentages of feed constituents should be printed on feed labels, along with the country of origin in cases where grain is imported. “As farmers, we rightly demand clear and precise labelling on products destined for the final consumer. The same demands should be placed on those supplying feed inputs,” he said. Current minimum statutory requirements necessitate the listing of the main feed constituents in descending order of inclusion weights. These requirements are integral to Bord Bia livestock quality assurance schemes.
