Effingham School Board Meeting Was Held Today

Effingham, IL / Effingham Radio Effingham, IL -(Effingham Radio)- The Effingham School Board held their regularly scheduled meeting today. The amended budget hearing was first, followed by public comment to the board by Kesney Estrada. The regular consent agenda was after the public comments, and part of the discussion centered around getting the Library Committee more funding. Board Member Robin Klosterman emphasized the need for more Library Budget funding, pointing out that the Early Learning Center doesn’t even have a library. The Board also discussed the upcoming school year, and how the plan is to have 5-day, in-person learning from the beginning of the year. Superintendent Mark Doan also said that the County Health Department is in charge of quarantining students and staff, not the school.

Durags and dress codes

Nancy Marschewski and her husband have three adopted sons who are multiracial. One of them was penalized after wearing a durag – a headscarf typically worn by Black males – to Effingham High School. Now the Effingham school board is considering a policy change. Marschewski, who is white, has taken her sons to hairdressers who specialize in Black hair. But the one her 17-year-old son usually went to stopped taking appointments during the pandemic.
