He was taken to Beebe Healthcare and given anesthesia so doctors could operate.
“Next thing I know, I wake up and I have just about 30 staples up and down my middle, and a bandage over my middle,” Gratton said. “They told me my whole abdomen wall on the right side is gone, but as I progress, it will build back up.”
Now, the staples are gone. Gratton still has a small hole in his abdomen he said is getting smaller every day. He is not in any pain.
Gratton is recovering at his girlfriend’s house in Lincoln. He’s able to walk, even jog a bit, and tries to take two or three walks a day. He is able to drive and goes to the grocery store. He does housework like taking out the trash and doing the dishes.

Milton pianist Mark Gratton is recovering after being shot in the abdomen New Year’s Eve.
“I’m trying to get back to teaching mid-February,” he said. “My body is healing pretty well.”
The 37-year-old Gratton met with an ex-girlfriend at his studio on Union Street in Milton that evening to discuss a dispute over a vehicle, but the conversation soon turned sour, he said. She went to the trunk of her car and retrieved a shotgun, firing birdshot into his abdomen, according to Gratton.
