Laura Johnson, 37, from Kurri Kurri, NSW, shares her hairy story:
Scanning the pub as customers swigged on their beers my heart sank.
The atmosphere wasn t how it used to be in my Chelmsford Hotel - better known as the Chelly - in Kurri Kurri, NSW.
The town was going through an economic downturn and the pub that d been in my family for 28 years was now a shadow of its former lively self.
Power plant costing taxpayers $600m to run at two per cent 26/05/2021|9min
Resources Minister Keith Pitt has defended the federal government’s decision to fund a new gas power station in the Hunter Valley.
The $600 million power plant at Kurri Kurri has been criticised after it was revealed the government plans to run the station at two per cent capacity.
Mr Pitt told Sky News this was a good decision from the Morrison government.
He said gas-fired turbines can “run for a continuous amount of time and “can be done in a very fast period”.
“If we can make them affordable, probably around $6.00 gas, then it ensures that there is affordable, reliable, dispatchable power in New South Wales.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has spruiked his plan to drive down electricity prices for everyday Australians.
Mr Morrison said he was committed to ensuring electricity prices remained low to support “heavy industries” in the nation’s manufacturing sector.
“We want to keep making things in this country,” he said.
“We're doing that at the same time as seeing emissions reduce by 19 per cent since 2005.”
It comes as the Coalition has invested $76.9 million via the Reliability and Emergency Reserve Trader scheme into the Portland smelter.
The Kurri Kurri gas plant and the Snowy Hydro scheme were also touted by Mr Morrison as key to Australia’s energy security.
