Sydney lord mayor Clover Moore says the New Year s Eve fireworks should be cancelled if police and health authorities are not convinced the event can be held safely, as the city confronts a growing coronavirus outbreak.

But the government said there were no plans to cancel this year s scaled-back event, which will feature a seven-minute fireworks show at midnight, as the northern beaches virus cluster rose to 83 cases on Monday.
Cr Moore said the council had been concerned it would be impossible to make New Year s Eve festivities safe, given the spectacle typically draws about one million people to the Sydney Harbour foreshore and surrounds.
