Farmers protest Day 22: Narendra Tomar writes letter to farmers; SC suggests putting new laws on hold

Tomar’s open letter comes soon after he met Home Minister and senior BJP leader Amit Shah along with Union ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Piyush Goyal to discuss the ongoing farmers’ agitation. According to PTI, the meeting was held at the BJP head office in New Delhi and was also attended by the party’s general secretaries CT Ravi, Dushyant Gautam and Arun Singh among others. It lasted for more than an hour. Earlier today, the Supreme Court acknowledged the right of farmers to non-violent protests and suggested that the Centre put on hold the implementation of the three contentious farm laws as it was thinking of setting up an “impartial and independent” panel of agriculture experts, which may include experts like P Sainath, and farmer unions to resolve the impasse.

LUDHIANA: Member of Parliament from Ludhiana Ravneet Singh Bittu, who has been on a dharna outside Jantar Mantar in New Delhi for the past five days in support of the agitating farmers, on Friday alleged that he and other Congress leaders camping with him are being harassed by the Delhi Police. Bittu said on Thursday late night, some policemen tried to remove their tarpaulin shed close to the footpath, under which he and other leaders spend the cold winter nights. The Ludhiana MP, along with other Congress leaders from Punjab, including MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla, MLAs Jasbir Singh Dimpa and Kulbir Singh Zira, are camping in the national capital to demand convening of a special session of Parliament to repeal the contentious farm laws.
