HR Magazine - Sleep deprivation overlooked in mental health awareness

Sleep deprivation overlooked in mental health awareness Published: UK employees who overwork are damaging their sleep patterns and risking long-term poor mental health. Almost a fifth (19.9%) of England’s workers put in significant overtime at work each week, according to new research by manufacturing company Blinds Direct. The knock-on effect of overworking is often less time for life admin, relaxation and sleep, which can lead to poor mental health. The damage to mental health caused by poor sleep is especially concerning given the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) estimated some 828,000 workers were affected by work-related stress, depression, or anxiety across the UK in 2019 and 2020.

Brighton is third most sleep-deprived city in the country, study finds

BRIGHTON is the second most overworked city in the country and the third most sleep-deprived, according to a new study. The research analysed a range of factors including light pollution levels, sun hours and average temperatures across the country to establish which parts of England experience the lowest quality of sleep. The WakeUpWell study by Blinds Direct also looked at people s working hours and the proportion of time they spend doing unpaid overtime. Brighton s 160,000 workers aged between 16 and 64 were found to spend 20.5 per cent of their working hours doing unpaid overtime - second only to London s workforce, on 24.4 per cent.
