40 at 40: Shyam Selvadurai looks back at the queer novel that launched his career
Nominated for a Canadian Screen Award this month for Funny Boy, the author discusses changes in Sri Lanka and identity politics’ second wave By Glenn Sumi

In September 1994, NOW put a young, unknown gay Sri-Lankan-Canadian novelist on the cover for his debut novel, Funny Boy. This month, Shyam Selvadurai – besides having several more acclaimed novels under his belt, including Cinnamon Gardens and The Hungry Ghosts – is nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for his adaptation of his first novel in Deepa Mehta’s film. ‘There is this sense you are on your own, there is no government responsibility’ in India – film director Gurinder Chadha
We spoke to British-Indian film director Gurinder Chadha, most of her films explore the lives of Indians living in England.
We asked her what she has been hearing from family in India about the situation on the ground.
Despite her credentials, Nagra still regularly finds herself in smaller roles with little room to explore, roles that occasionally border on pigeonholing. Sheâs played numerous doctors, including one in Bird Box, the postapocalyptic horror film starring Sandra Bullock. Nagra was asked to deliver her lines with an Indian accent. âWhy did they make Parminder Nagra have an accent?â asked a journalist on Twitter. âThey let the murdering white guy keep his British accent. Sheâs British too.â Nagra replied: âAsk the powers that be.â
She has mixed feelings about Bird Box, which was directed by Susanne Bier, whose most recent drama was The Undoing, starring Hugh Grant and Nicole Kidman. âI wasnât thrilled about playing the doctor again,â says Nagra. âBut itâs an amazing piece of work with an amazing director, and itâs Sandra Bullock.
