  ‘This could have been anyone’s sister or daughter’: A town shocked at the death of innocent Aya Flowers are still placed at the scene of the shooting on King Street, Blackburn (Picture August 3 2021) The death of Aya Hachem who was shot in broad daylight during the month of Ramadan shocked a whole town. Here local councillors and community groups have spoken of the courage of the family who finally saw ‘justice served’. Over the course of the 57-day trial, the court heard Aya, a 19-year-old law student, was shot in King Street, Blackburn on May 17 last year. The court heard the drive-by shooting was organised by Feroz Suleman, who had been embroiled in a bitter feud with his neighbour and business rival Pacha Khan. Suleman hired a hitman from Manchester, Zamir Raja, to carry out the fatal shooting for the price of £1,500.

The non-Muslims who are fasting during Ramadan in East Lancashire

One Voice Blackburn is inviting non-Muslims to fast for one day, for the community project. People from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, Pleckgate High School, Lancashire Mind, East Lancashire Hospitals Trust and many members of the public are among those who are taking part. ‘I’m not a Muslim but I will fast for one day’ is now in its seventh year. Ramadan is the holy Islamic month where Muslims forgo food and water between sunrise and sunset. This year Ramadan in the UK consists of a 16 and a half hour fast, having started on April 13 and ending on May 11.

Charity aims to dispel Covid vaccine myths within the Asian community

A charity has released a series of videos aimed at dispelling Covid-19 vaccination myths within the Asian community. The videos entitled ‘Dispelling the Myths’ features local health experts, religious leaders and vaccinators and has been launched by One Voice Blackburn. Recent research shows that members of the South Asian heritage are most likely to abstain from taking the new vaccinations. According to some reports, including GP online, there have been between 20 and 30 per cent  ‘Did Not Attends’ among the BAME community compared to 2/3 per cent with other sections of society in the UK. Covid-19 has disproportionately affected ethnic minority groups in developed countries. In the UK, people of black ethnicity have had the highest diagnosis rates.
