Death crash child to face trial

Premium Content Subscriber only THE teenager accused of killing four friends while behind the wheel of a stolen car on the wrong side of the road has had his matter indicted to a higher court. Four children were killed on June 7, 2020 when the car they were travelling in smashed into pole and flipped at the intersection of Duckworth St and Bayswater Rd in the early hours of the morning. Photos showing the twisted wreckage of the Kia Sorrento (pictured) sent shockwaves through the Townsville community and across the country, sparking criticism of the state s youth justice legislation and putting youth crime in the national spotlight when it was later revealed that the 14-year-old driver - and only survivor - was on bail.

Violent teen out in two weeks despite judge s tough sentence

A judge has given the last resort sentence of detention to a juvenile with a history of violent armed robberies, including two involving use of knives to hold up rideshare drivers. Queensland Children s Court president Judge Deborah Richards said only two months before robbing an Uber driver, the boy, now 16, was sentenced to two years probation for violent robberies. When Judge Richards asked him what had happened in those two months, he said: Dumb stuff . It s not. It s violent, dangerous criminal stuff, Judge Richards said, telling the teen his offending had an awful effect on not only the victims, but on his mother and siblings.
