CUMBRIAN drivers are being warned to take it easy on certain roads in the region - or risk fatalities! However, it is not humans that are at risk - instead, it is the county s frog and toad population that risk being squashed. The amphibians become a common site on the roads as the nights grow shorter and warmer as they search for a mate - but their small size and habit of trying to cross roads at night mean they are hit by cars on a regular basis. To try and protect the animals, a team from West Cumbria Rivers Trust have been patrolling areas where frogs and toads are known to cross roads and rescuing them from an unpleasant fate.

Drivers urged to slow down as frog and toad migration gets underway

West Cumbria Rivers Trust is urging drivers to slow down for the next few weeks as the annual frog, toad and newt migration gets underway.
Every year, amphibians move from winter hibernation spots to their breeding ponds and lakes and some have to cross roads to do so.
They only move when the weather is just right, waiting for nights with mild and wet conditions.
When that happens, they move en masse, and hundreds can die each night.
Trust staff are doing âtoad patrolsâ on wet evenings when the animals are most likely to move, carrying frogs and toads in buckets from dangerous roads to the ponds they are heading for.
