'Dam' good flood prevention begins at Whinlatter Forest

The project aims to slow the flow of water to Lorton and the River Cocker Picture: West Cumbria Rivers Trust Work on a natural flood management project at Whinlatter Forest has officially begun. In partnership with Forestry England and the Environment Agency, West Cumbria Rivers Trust is installing over 200 leaky dams in Aiken Beck, Whinlatter Gill and various tributaries and forest ditches. The project aims to slow the flow of water towards Lorton and the River Cocker, utilising logs and tree trunks from Whinlatter to create the dams, which will hold back water when beck levels are high during storms.

Bumper year for West Cumbria Rivers Trust

Bumper year for West Cumbria Rivers Trust New large pond at the Naddle West Cumbria Rivers Trust had its best year yet in 2020, despite the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic. The trust delivered more on-the-ground environmental improvements than ever before in 2020, including its biggest ever project – the £1.5 million removal of a 2.5-kilometre-long plastic liner from the River Keekle near Whitehaven. Elsewhere, three barriers to fish passage were removed, enabling migrating native salmon and trout to reach new upstream areas, and almost 100 metres of river previously running through underground culverts was brought to the surface and restored to a natural course.

An extraordinary 2020: Vaccine jabs bring hope in December

VACCINE: New jab on the scene December started off positively with the rollout of a Covid-19 vaccine.  The first patient in Cumbria to receive it was 80-year-old Agnes Hardy, from Kells in Whitehaven, closely followed by Pat Lumb, 84 in Barrow. By the end of the month, with infection rates rising, news broke that the new and more contagious variant of the virus had reached Cumbria. HOPE: Walney resident Pat Lumb gets her first Covid-19 shot from Dr Arun Thimmiah In other news, forecasters announced a cold snap over the festive period with predictions Cumbria could have a White Christmas. Jeremy and Mandy Voakes, of Cark-in-Cartmel, certainly had the Christmas spirit.
