(WTOC) - Talk to the people who work inside the historic Candler County Courthouse and they will tell you working inside a piece of history can have its drawbacks. But they are excited about the changes on the way. Staff members in the Clerk of Court’s Office joke that they must go outside to change their mind. Their portion of the century old courthouse has forced them to start keeping some records off site.

Clay County conducts first-ever online jury qualification Published:  Updated:  Tags:  Clay County Courthouse conducts its first-ever online jury qualification process (Courtesy: Clay County Clerk of Court) GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. – For the first time ever, the Clay County Courthouse selected a jury earlier this month after holding its jury duty qualification process exclusively online. Of the 400 residents tapped for jury duty, 342 showed up March 5 on Zoom, where the court narrowed its pool of prospective jurors down to 100. Hours later, the process resulted in a confirmed jury pool of 36 residents, and a jury of six jurors and one alternate was selected March 8.

Friends, family remember former Clerk of Court

Shirley Asbell. Shirley Asbell operates one of the county s first copy machines at the Clerk of Court s Office. It was taken about June of 1954. Courtesy Colquitt County Clerk of Court s Office MOULTRIE, Ga. — On February 10, 2021, Shirley Margaret Tucker Asbell passed away at Colquitt Regional Medical Center. She was known throughout Colquitt County as a loving mother, avid church goer and the county clerk of Superior Court for many years.  She is survived by her children Vickie Birchfield and Patti Walters as well as Asbell’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Birchfield lamented, “She was loving, supportive, and just loves the Lord with all her heart.”
