CLEVELAND – In their final road game of the 2020-21 season, the Grand Rapids Griffins fell to the Cleveland Monsters by a 6-4 count on Friday at the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
After getting shut out by
Kaden Fulcher and the Griffins 2-0 here on Tuesday, the Monsters opened the scoring 6:07 into this contest, when Tristan Mullin roofed a shot over Fulcher from low in the left circle. Cleveland’s potent power play then connected just seven seconds into its first opportunity, as Carson Meyer scored from the slot at 8:18 to make it 2-0 for the home team.

It wasn t the news Carson Meyer probably wanted to hear.
But it s also fair to say he might not be where he is today without it.
When the coronavirus pandemic ended his Ohio State career mere days after he scored four goals in a Big Ten tournament game, the 2017 CBJ sixth-round draft pick was plunged into a world of uncertainty.
Meyer s college career was over, but what was going to happen from there? Who knew when he d step on the ice next, and who knew who it would be with, as the deadline for the Blue Jackets to have exclusive rights to sign the Powell native came and went.
What has to happen for the Blue Jackets to catch a break?
The shorthanded Jackets have lost nine in a row (0-7-2), tied for the longest win streak in franchise history, and the last two setbacks in Tampa Bay were marked by stretches of good play and bad breaks on two big goals.
In Thursday s series opener, goalie Elvis Merzlikins was hit in the helmet by a high stick moments before the Lightning scored the game-winning goal, leading to a protest from the CBJ netminder but a goal that stood because it couldn t be challenged.
Then in Sunday s finale, another bad break allowed the Lightning to score a key goal in the third period. Goalie Joonas Korpisalo suffered a lower-body injury with the team on the penalty kill and tried to fight through it, but he couldn t move over on a cross-ice pass, allowing Lightning rookie Alex Barre-Boulet to score his first career goal to tie the score at 3 in what would become a 4-3 overtime setback.
Elvis Merzlikins comments after the Blue Jackets loss to Tampa Bay on Thursday night underscored just how tough it is for the team right now as it plays out the 2021 season.
