The proponent behind a “nation-building” Mackay region water scheme says the project will deliver at least a $2 return to taxpayers for every $1 the government invests in it.
Bowen River Utilities recently completed the draft detailed business case for the water scheme supporting Urannah Dam’s construction.
BRU is currently consulting with stakeholders on the findings before publicly releasing the final draft business case later this month.
The draft business case supports building the 970,000 megalitre dam, which is set to deliver an annual yield of 103,000 megalitres of high priority water.
BRU said the project’s new pipeline to Moranbah would deliver reliable water to customers in the Bowen Basin and a pipeline corridor to Peter Faust Dam would future-proof water security for the Whitsunday region.

Subscriber only Mine workers will today plead their case before a Senate Inquiry on proposed workplace law changes which the union has labelled a detriment to Mackay and its resources industry. Tightening the definition of casual employment will be a key aspect of a 27 page submission union representatives will present to the committee, which is sitting in Townsville. CFMEU Mining and Energy Queensland southwest vice-president Shane Brunker said the casualisation of mine jobs was a cancer that s spreading through the industry . He said there were thousands of workers across the Bowen Basin, contracted through labour hire companies as a casual employee but working a full-time roster without benefits such as annual or sick leave.
A $1 billion Central Queensland coal mine promising 1000 jobs is still facing a legal challenge, despite having received the necessary mining leases. Breeding property Sunland Cattle Co has confirmed it is still pushing ahead with its judicial review of Pembroke Resources Olive Downs mine near Moranbah. The matter has been heard in the Supreme Court, with a judgment delivery date not yet finalised. Sunland Cattle Co is concerned about the impact of the mine on water supply for nearby property owners. It is not pushing for the mine to be stopped, but wants assurances the water supply will not be impacted.

Subscriber only An Anglo American mine site in the Bowen Basin is operating the first of two reverse osmosis (RO) water treatment plants, to reduce the use of freshwater in its mining operations. CEO Tyler Mitchelson said the $5 million water treatment system was treating two megalitres of mine affected water a day and supporting construction of the Aquila Mine near Middlemount. A key target in Anglo American s global Sustainable Mining Plan is to reduce our reliance on freshwater by 50 per cent by 2030 across our mine sites, and I m pleased to say Aquila is currently sourcing recycled water during construction of the mine, he said.
