Bobby Goldberg, flying with VMF-511 on the USS Block Island, disappeared over the Pacific’s Ryukyu Islands in May 1945. Seven years later the government declared him killed in action. According to a news release, Sheffield will take command during a special ceremony in June. He will replace Col. David Doss as base commander. Doss has been assigned to another position at the U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command headquarters at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana.
