Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s ‘Rang De Basanti’ is an era-defining film in Hindi cinema. Helmed by superstar Aamir Khan as one of the lead members of the cast, the film also stars Tamil actor Siddharth, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Soha Ali Khan, Kunal Kapoor, Waheeda Rahman, and Om Puri amongst others. Around the time of Toofan’s release, Rakeysh had also revealed that Farhan Akhtar was offered a part in the film. Shahid Kapoor has mentioned in the past that he could not sign Rang De Basanti because of his other work commitments. In an excerpt from his autobiography, Rakeysh Mehra spoke about the special contract clause by Aamir Khan.

Filmmaker and director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra recalls in his autobiography ‘The Stranger in the Mirror’ that James Bond actor Daniel Craig auditioned for the role of the jailor who walks freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev to be hanged in his film ‘Rang De Basanti.’
“I remember vividly that one of the people who auditioned for the part of James McKinley, the young jailor who walks Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev to be hanged, was none other than current James Bond, Daniel Craig,” reveals Mehra in his autobiography.

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra recently revealed in his upcoming autobiography that Aamir Khan had included a clause before signing ‘Rang De Basanti’, according to which, he would double his fees if the film is not completed on time.
Spilling the beans on the same, he wrote in the book, Aamir is a visionary and understands everything that is going wrong or right with the creative process. According to the filmmaker, sometimes tough decisions like ‘let’s shoot for 10 more days’ became easy because Aamir backed the need to do it. He added that the actor had no ego about whose scene it was. If the scene belonged to the other boys, he would happily stay in the background because the film’s narrative was the Bible that could not be tampered with.
