Architect Vishaan Chakrabarti is explaining why he doesn’t think the pandemic will drive people away from cities from a remote office that appears in his Google Meet video to resemble a Finnish sauna.
“Cities and density did not form out of economic necessity. That is an idea that economists and technologists have been trying to foist on us for centuries,” the founder and creative director of the Practice for Architecture and Urbanism and dean of the UC Berkeley College of Environmental Design says.
He gazes at the screen, wearing a black mock turtleneck sweater, and ticks off ancient cities that formed for spiritual or cultural reasons.

New office space is coming at 3151 Market, right across from Drexel’s business school, but one of the more interesting parts may be the art-covered alley coming with it.
Brandywine Realty Trust, the developer, intends to use the narrow space between Market Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard to create a connection for pedestrians and bicycles. It will be lit 24/7. Work from local artists will decorate the walls.
“We want a building that feels alive,” said Alex Fernández, the design principal with Gensler, Tuesday in a presentation before the city’s Civic Design Review Design board.

Tax Abatement Legislation Update
On December 10, 2020, City Council voted to advance three bills related to the property tax abatement (described in detail in our last
Bill No. 200653 reduces the benefits of the commercial/industrial tax abatement (the Ordinance 1130 abatement). This bill reduces the tax abatement to 90% of the value of the improvements for 10 years. This reduction would apply to all applications filed after December 31, 2021.
