Berkeley police arrest suspect on suspicion of antisemitic hate crime

On May 3, Berkeley Police Department officers arrested a suspect who allegedly committed various acts of antisemitic vandalism across multiple days. The suspect, a 39-year-old man with no listed address, first allegedly vandalized a private residence on the 2500 block of Warring Street on April 29 between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m., according to a BPD Nixle alert. The suspect allegedly left antisemitic graffiti and also destroyed an artifact of Jewish religious significance. Between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. the same day, the suspect allegedly vandalized a Jewish synagogue with more antisemitic graffiti, the destruction of more Jewish religious artifacts and a handmade reverse swastika on the 1300 block of Oxford Street, the alert added.

Denver s Civic Center Draws a Sparse 4/20 Crowd

Civic Center Park on April 20, 2021, as 4:20 p.m. approached. Hilal Bahcetepe This was the second year in a row that Civic Center was quiet on 4/20. Last year, while stay-at-home orders were in effect because of the pandemic, the perimeter of the park was closed off by fences, police officers waited in the grass, and sirens and automated warnings blared at 4:20 p.m. Pandemic notwithstanding, Denver attracts thousands of cannabis tourists, activists and consumers each year to celebrate the unofficial holiday for stoners. Civic Center has been the designated venue to host 4/20 rallies and protests for more than a decade, thanks largely to the late cannabis activist Ken Gorman. Two competing organizers say they plan to host something at Civic Center next year, so we’ll see how cloudy things get in 2022.
