VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - The Valdosta Police Department (VPD) announced the dates for their 33rd session of the Citizenâs Police Academy (CPA).
It is set to be held each Thursday night from 6:30-9 p.m. starting April 15-June 10.
VPD said the goal of the nine-week program is to give citizens a better understanding of the internal workings of a modern-day law enforcement agency and at the same time, promote a team concept between the department and the citizens that they serve.
Use-of-force policy changes
Pullman Police Chief Gary Jenkins said he recently revised Pullman PD’s policy manual, and the Pullman Police Officers’ Guild is currently reviewing it.
As part of the new use-of-force policy, the manual identifies what a chokehold is and prohibits officers from using it. Jenkins said chokeholds will only be used in cases where deadly force would be authorized. These changes will be implemented next month.
The revised manual also includes an intervention policy, he said. This will ensure use-of-force incidents are documented and handled properly through the review and response process.
“Officers are required to intervene if they observe another officer using excessive force … and also required for them to report that as well,” he said.

The dashboard categorizes reform recommendations into four categories based on their progress toward completion, but does not reveal how each reform is being accomplished. The dashboard which was last updated October 28, 2020, less than a month after being launched shows 42% of reform recommendations were completed.
But Matter has only been able to verify 19 of the 43 of those recommendations, excluding recommendations that focus on maintaining policies or changing personnel, rather than policy changes.
Of the 80 Safety Commission recommendations, 26 were shown as “Completed” on the dashboard, but only two were immediately verifiable. CPD has so far failed to provide verification of the other 24.
