SURAT: A court in Surat awarded life imprisonment to Shailesh Rathod, a 45-year-old textile unit worker for raping and impregnating his 19-year-old niece.
The court convicted Rathod, a resident of Salabatpura area, for rape and sexual assault under the sections of the Indian Penal Code.
The girl was eight months pregnant when the family came to know about her ordeal.
Due to the delay, she could not get the foetus aborted. DNA profiling of the child proved that Rathod was her father.
The complaint was lodged by the elder brother of the girl at Salabatpura police station on September 23, 2020 in which he claimed that she was 14-year-old.

A fire broke out at a hospital in Gujarat s Bharuch in the wee hours of Saturday, May 1, claiming the lives of at least 18 coronavirus patients who died due to the resultant smoke.
Heart-wrenching visuals of the mishap showed the remains of some patients on beds and stretchers. There were approx. 50 other patients at the four-storeyed Welfare Hospital when the tragedy struck.

SURAT: At least four critically ill COVID-19 patients died at different hospitals in Surat in Gujarat where they were shifted along with 12 others from the ICU ward of a private hospital following a fire, officials said on Monday.
A total of 16 patients were rescued and shifted to different hospitals from the ICU ward of Ayush Hospital located on the fifth floor of a building after a fire broke out there around 11:40 pm on Sunday due to a short circuit.
A 21-year-old Dalit man was allegedly beaten to death by a group of men belonging to the upper caste Patel community for attending a garba event in Gujarat s Anand district in the early hours on Sunday, police said. The incident took place around 4 am.
