India’s largest law firm, Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas (CAM), is set to open an office in the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City).
The office which has been approved by the International Financial Services Centre, aims to assist companies navigate the legal and regulatory framework of the GIFT City .
In February, CAM announced the launch of a representative office in Singapore, its first overseas presence.
The GIFT City office will be led by managing partner Cyril Shroff, along with partners L. Viswanathan and Paridhi Adani.
GIFT City, which is located in the western state of Gujarat, is emerging as a preferred destination for financial services and IT/ITes companies.

The two law firms’ moves follow a new February 2021 regulatory regime in the GIFT special economic zone (SEZ) announced last month. J Sagar Associates (JSA) after having been first to open in the GIFT in 2017, had not renewed its licence during the pandemic.
IC Universal wrote in a statement last week: “The firm has opened its branch office in GIFT IFSC and has become the first law firm to receive the regulatory authorisation from International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) to provide legal, regulatory and compliance services from IFSCs.”

Move could overlap with GIFT City’s plans
Markets regulator SEBI is mulling a bullion spot exchange in Mumbai, a move that could clash with the plans announced by the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT).
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) was designated to regulate the spot bullion market in February by the Finance Minister in the budget speech. SEBI has held two meetings with the National Stock Exchange, the BSE, the Multi Commodity Exchange and the National Commodities and Derivatives Exchange so far to discuss the matter, sources told
