Shrubs and plants on the riverbanks will be levelled as part of the river cleaning initiative Vadodara: Allaying the concerns raised by wildlife activists over cleaning of Vishwamitri River, the civic officials have said that no crocodiles will disturbed in their habitat during the monsoon clean-up drive. Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) officials and forest department are jointly conducting the clean-up drive in the river that frequently witnesses flood frequently during monsoon. The activists, though, are planning to issue a notice to the civic body. “The river cleaning drive is being done in a planned manner. We are aware that Vishwamitri is an abode to crocodiles and many other aquatic creatures. So, utmost care is being taken to ensure that the reptiles aren’t disturbed,” said Shailesh Naik, deputy municipal commissioner.

Eight-feet croc rescued from Dumad | Vadodara News

Vadodara: An eight-feet-long crocodile was rescued from the outskirts of the city late on Saturday night by volunteers of Gujarat Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA). The reptile was rescued from Dumad village and handed over to the forest officials. GSPCA volunteers said that the reptile may have ventured out of Vishwamitri River and crawled into a pool of water by the roadside in Dumad village. Locals spotted the reptile and alerted the GSPCA about its presence. During monsoons, crocodiles often venture out of Vishwamitri River, home to hundreds of reptiles. Dozens of reptiles also live in the ponds across the city and these too migrate from one water body to another during the rainy season.

Cleaning Vishwamitri river sparks row | Vadodara News

Vadodara: Work to clean the Vishwamitri river has sparked a row with animal welfare activists stating that it would disturb reptiles during their breeding season. The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) started the work on Saturday in wake of the monsoon as the foliage as well as material on the banks of the river would obstruct flow of water. The civic body promised to do so without disturbing the ecology of the river. However, Raj Bhavsar from the Gujarat Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals stated that crocodiles and other reptiles would be breeding presently. He added that disturbing them at this stage may also lead to them venturing into populated areas.

Croc ventures near housing society in Bil | Vadodara News

Vadodara: Residents of a colony in Bil had been living in fear over the last few days after two crocodiles ventured into a pit nearby. A grown-up and another younger reptile were spotted by the locals near Wood Scrape Society following which they informed the volunteers of Gujarat Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA). “We reached the spot on Thursday with the forest officials and laid a trap for the reptile. A three-and-half-feet crocodile was rescued from the pit,” said Raj Bhavsar who runs GSPCA. Another crocodile is yet to be rescued. With monsoons arriving, crocodiles from Vishwamitri River often venture out of their abode and migrate to other water bodies in the city.
