Amazon s union vote count is still going — but organizers are already planning likely challenge

Uncovering and explaining how our digital world is changing and changing us. The votes haven’t all been counted in the first attempt to unionize a large Amazon facility in the US, but the union involved has already said it will likely challenge the election results. The current count strongly favors Amazon. “Our system is broken, Amazon took full advantage of that, and we will be calling on the labor board to hold Amazon accountable for its illegal and egregious behavior during the campaign,” Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union (RWDSU) president Stuart Appelbaum said in a statement to Recode on Thursday evening.

Gentrification conference to take a look at Rochester history

The two-day event will be held virtually and in-person with a focus on the history of Rochester’s housing segregation and activism. Calvin Eaton, founder of 540 West Main, says the event will educate the people who will be directly affected by community development. “People can’t even know what options there are (and) how we as a community speak to these issues if they don’t have the education about why Rochester specifically looks the way that it looks,” says Eaton.

Opinion: Berkeley may end exclusionary zoning

When I was speaking across the country promoting the housing policy changes urged in my book, Generation Priced Out, I did not foresee my hometown of Berkeley ending exclusionary zoning before Seattle, Denver and other cities. To the contrary, my book discusses how Berkeley’s 1973 “Neighborhood Preservation Ordinance” became a national model for using “neighborhood character” and “public input” to stop new apartments. Through most of 2020,  Berkeley refused to end exclusionary zoning. City officials would not even back Councilmember Lori Droste’s proposal to study allowing new “missing middle” fourplexes in many neighborhoods. But that was prior to last November’s elections. Berkeley politics has since been transformed.
