Public trained to identify invasive flora Updated: Updated: To map spread of exotic species Share Article To map spread of exotic species The public, trained in identifying invasive species of flora, may prove to be an extremely useful part of ascertaining the extent of invasive flora in the Nilgiris. Recently, the Ashoka Trust for Research on Ecology and Environment (ATREE), Bengaluru, along with Keystone Foundation in Kotagiri, organised a training programme for residents from local communities to identify around 27 species of invasive flora in different parts of the Nilgiris. Shiny Mariam Rehel, programme coordinator for the Biodiversity Restoration Programme at Keystone Foundation, said the residents would collect data on the type of invasive species present in a given location as well as the extent of the species in any given area and other parameters.

Expert group to assess threats to plant species in the Nilgiris Updated: Updated: Share Article Members of the Western Ghats Plant Specialist Group in Udhagamandalam. | Photo Credit: Sathyamoorthy M Threats to endemic flora in the Western Ghats will be assessed by experts comprising the Western Ghats Plant Specialist Group (WGPSG). Members of the WGPSG of the Species Survival Commission of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) met here recently, to chart a future course of study of endemic plant species in the Nigiris and across the Western Ghats. “The study of these species will include documentation, assessing the threats they face as well as understanding their distribution in local landscapes,” said Aparna Watve, Red List Assessment Coordinator for the group. There were more than 2,100 endemic species of flora across the Western Ghats.
