Hospitalizations for COVID-19 remained flat at a high level across Maine for a second week running, but the burden has clearly shifted back to hospitals in Portland and Lewiston, giving Bangor’s Eastern Maine Medical Center a respite.
Maine Medical Center in Portland, the state’s largest hospital with 613 beds, has experienced its heaviest week since the pandemic began, with an average of 40.9 COVID-19 inpatients a day for the week ending Thursday. It is the third week in a row that Maine Med has broken its record, which stood at 38 COVID-19 inpatients per day two weeks ago today and 38.4 last week.

No additional ships in 2021
BAR HARBOR At this week’s Town Council meeting, council members voted to add no additional cruise ships to the existing schedule for the 2021 season. They also accepted the advice of Town Manager Cornell Knight who suggested the council hire the Portland-based Pan Atlantic Consultants to conduct research, generate and distribute a survey about cruise ships. “The estimate would be $12,600… they can complete the [survey] work by the end of March, but they would just need to start this month,” said Knight. Council member Jill Golthwait’s proposed motion to add no additional cruise ships for the 2021 season was seconded by council member Erin Cough and passed unanimously. The motion to accept the consultant hiring advice from the town manager was enacted by council member Gary Friedmann and passed unanimously as well.
Did You Feel That Earthquake in Maine a Few Days Ago?
By no means was it a massive, earth-shattering earthquake, but I feel like earthquakes are so random in New England that no matter how big or how small, we re usually all like, WHOA! AN EARTHQUAKE?! HERE?!
That was more or less what it was like in Downeast Maine on Sunday (which goes to show that here it is Wednesday morning, and it was so minor that I m like oh, there was an earthquake? Cool. Let me blog about it because EARTHQUAKE IN MAINE!). According to Channel 8 WMTW, a little quake that registered at a 2.8 on the ole Richter Scale hit in Washington County just southeast of Centerville and northwest of Jonesboro.

Annual baked bean supper goes virtual
MOUNT DESERT Baked beans are an important part of Maine culinary life. Recipes are much debated, with bakers arguing about which ingredients make the best beans, and which variety of beans to use. Baked bean suppers are a Maine tradition, bringing generations together to share a meal, exchange news and spin a few yarns.
The Mount Desert Island Historical Society’s 10th Annual Baked Bean Supper will still capture these important elements of a traditional baked bean supper, but due to COVID-19 restrictions, the event will take place online instead of at MDI High School.
