The headlines continue to remind us that we live in a dangerous world. The United States surpassed 300 mass shootings in June 2021, with more than 1,800 people injured or killed, according to research from The Washington Post.
Today (Aug. 3) added to that total, as a gunman shot three workers at a SmileDirectClub facility in Antioch, Tenn., a suburb of Nashville. SmileDirectClub responded to a PRNEWS inquiry for a statement on the incident. It also delivered a message to the public via Twitter.

Firefighters want the option to wear protective gear that doesn’t contain toxic chemicals. The only problem? The very garment manufacturers whose gear contains PFAS sit on the standard-setting committee they must convince.

A typical summertime activity, visiting an amusement park, turned tragic at Adventureland Park in Altoona, Iowa. On July 3, an 11-year-old boy, Michael Jaramillo, died after a group tube on the Raging River ride flipped over, trapping him and his family members underneath. His brother, 15-year-old David, remains in a medically-induced coma.
Adventureland Park released a statement July 4 on its Facebook page. The park offered condolences and said it would continue to work with local authorities, while the ride remains closed.
According to ABC News, the park also confirmed a positive inspection of the ride July 2, with no issues reported. However, an attorney for the park jumped in with an additional statement to ABC News on July 5, saying the ride was safe.

For fans of Ellie Kemper, known for her quirky, yet sweet roles on shows “The Office” and “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” last week’s unsettling news about her past may have come as somewhat of a surprise.
On May 30, a photo surfaced online of Kemper crowned queen at the 1999 Veiled Prophet Ball in St. Louis, Mo. The ball, founded by confederate soldiers in 1878, provided a type of debutante celebration for the city’s wealthy elite. According to Yahoo News, the organization did not welcome black members until 1979. The Veiled Prophet character shares similarities in looks to that of a uniform from the Klu Klux Klan, which rattled many Kemper followers.
