Researchers at UMass Medical School are seeking “the sweet spot” for giving the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to kids, and they are asking kids to join the study and help.
“We’re trying to find that sweet spot between giving enough of vaccine to generate a good enough immune response to protect against the virus while providing an acceptable safety profile,” Dr. Katherine Luzuriaga, who heads up the study, said in an interview Friday.
“Our ultimate goal is to have this vaccine used in as wide a range of the pediatric population as possible, so the protocol and study is open to most children.”

The setup includes personal study cubes, an indoor play space, and a fenced outdoor area for fresh air.
“We have divided in into three different categories with young students starting with kindergarten going up to 8th grade,” Graby said. “It’s our answer to the challenges parents are facing.”
