That’s the reality for some migrants stuck in New Zealand with Covid-19 border closures. Kea Kids News reporter Zythea Laud, 11, from St Joseph s School in Onehunga, went along to speak to some of the families involved in a march through Auckland in support of migrants rights. Watch the video above. Anubhav Jain participated in the march and is a father alone in New Zealand, having not seen his wife and son since June 2019.

The much-delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics are underway. Athletes Maddie Davidson and Andrea Anacan are thrilled at the opportunity to compete and shared with Kea Kids News young reporters how the games will be different this year. Davidson will be the first female trampolinist to represent Aotearoa New Zealand at the Olympic Games. She says that due to Covid-19 restrictions she will have to wear a mask in all public areas until she gets on the trampoline – then the mask will drop to the ground, as she flies high.

12:00, Jul 21 2021 LUKE NOLA AND FRIENDS Kea Kids News discovers how decade after decade Te Waha O Rerekohu Area School students have learnt under the shade of the same massive pōhutukawa. The oldest pōhutukawa tree in the world is a reminder of their history to the people of the small coastal town of Te Araroa, near East Cape. The tree, Te Waha o Rerekohu, is estimated to be at least 600-years-old and is a local focal point, standing strong and proud in Te Waha O Rerekohu Area School’s grounds. About 50 metres wide, the tree is a symbol of the community’s deep roots.

At 10 years old Liam Jones is already a plant expert, and has started a side hustle selling pot plants on TradeMe. In the Kea Kids News video above, Liam takes us through his grandmother s Kaukapakapa nursery in regional Auckland, and explains why he loves these green goodies so much. Liam bursts with knowledge; sharing the Latin names of the plants, and what fuels his enthusiasm for nurturing them. In June, a variegated minima sold on TradeMe for $27,100 – a record for houseplants on the auction site. Liam reckons that if he nourished a curtsey plant and let it grow large, he may be able to get a similar price.
