LUKE NOLA AND FRIENDS
Kea Kids News discovers how decade after decade Te Waha O Rerekohu Area School students have learnt under the shade of the same massive pōhutukawa.
The oldest pōhutukawa tree in the world is a reminder of their history to the people of the small coastal town of Te Araroa, near East Cape.
The tree, Te Waha o Rerekohu, is estimated to be at least 600-years-old and is a local focal point, standing strong and proud in Te Waha O Rerekohu Area School’s grounds.
About 50 metres wide, the tree is a symbol of the community’s deep roots.
