DOVER Growing up in a family of 12 children in the segregated South, Mayor Carolyn Blackman said, she took inspiration from the teachings of many leaders, including civil rights icon John Lewis. I m a country girl from Virginia, Blackman said Tuesday as she unveiled a road plaque dedicating the new bridge at the corner of East Blackwell and Salem streets in memory of Lewis, the late U.S. congressman. I dealt a lot with what John Lewis went through.
Flanked by Morris County commissioners, legislators and other dignitaries, Blackman recalled a time and place that inspired Lewis, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and others to launch the civil rights movement, taking actions Lewis used to refer to as good trouble.
