July 11, 1872: The Herald and Tribune reported, “On last Thursday, the new Hotel at Johnson City, was struck by lightning. Several persons were severely shocked, but no one seriously injured. The lightning struck several other points in the city and vicinity.” The Herald and Tribune was, and still is, is a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way on the masthead of the paper in 1872. Inside the pages of the paper, readers could also see the town spelled as Jonesboro’. July 11, 1906: The Chattanooga Daily Times, with a dateline from Johnson City, reported on a new industry. “A charter for the Watauga Knitting Mills has been secured with L. Whitney Wood, Frank Taylor, L.P. Wood, T.A. Cox and E.J. Vaught as charter members.”

Flash floods, hail pound northwestern North Dakota

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) Utility crews are working to restore power to hundreds of people in northwestern North Dakota and eastern Montana after a round of storms smacked the region with heavy rains, high winds and hail. The Bismarck Tribune reported the storm swept through Thursday night. Some areas received as much as four-and-a-half inches of rain. Williams County saw flash flooding. Part of a truck wash collapsed in Williston. That area also.

1 dead in Montgomery three-vehicle crash Sunday Updated Jan 18, 2021; A Montgomery woman is dead following a three-vehicle crash that happened Sunday night. Montgomery Police said the incident happened at 6:50 p.m. on Narrow Lane Road near the intersection of East Fairview Avenue. A 2010 Honda CRV, driven by Hannah Ford, 26, collided with a 2009 Chevrolet Impala carrying four occupants, and a 2008 Toyota Sienna with three occupants. Police say the initial investigation indicates the Impala was traveling north on Narrow Lane Road when it lost control colliding with the Toyota Sienna and then the Honda CRV. Three people in the Impala sustained minor injuries. No one in the Sienna was injured.
