Hermiston City Council approves contract for industrial park project

The city of Hermiston is on its way to making the South Hermiston Industrial Park more “shovel ready” after city councilors awarded a bid for a $1.6 million construction project at their Monday, May 24, meeting. The project will extend Southeast Campbell Drive down to East Penney Avenue, pave an undeveloped right of way for Southeast 10th Street connecting to Highway 395, create a new road leading into Port of Umatilla-owned property, and add water and sewer lines in the area. The council awarded to contract to Tapani, Inc. of Richland, Washington, which was the apparent low bidder of four bids. “All four of these bids were within $100,000,” Assistant City Manager Mark Morgan said.

Recreation supervisor recognized for stepping in on shooting

A city employee who stepped in during a recent shooting was recognized for “actions above and beyond the normal call of duty” during the Hermiston City Council’s Monday, March 8, meeting. Brandon Artz, the city’s recreation supervisor, was the previously unnamed city employee that Hermiston Police Department had praised for “quick thinking” on February 10 when police arrested Howard Califf, 46, of Hermiston on several charges, including attempted murder. According to the initial news release from police, Califf arrived armed at a home in the 250 block of East Gladys Avenue that he had previously lived in and then been barred from by a court order. He allegedly fired several rounds inside the residence and at a male relative of the home’s owner, at one point shooting the victim’s dog as it attempted to defend its owner. The dog is expected to make a full recovery, police said.

Hermiston police arrest armed man

HERMISTON — Hermiston police arrested a man they believe was on a mission to cause incredible harm to the occupants of a Hermiston home on Wednesday, Feb. 10. Howard Califf, 46, of Hermiston, was detained after officers arrived at the 250 block of East Gladys Avenue at about 9:40 a.m. on Feb. 10 after receiving a report of a man with a gun, according to a news release from Hermiston Police Department. Califf had previously lived at the residence in question, but was no longer allowed there after a court order issued in December 2020. According to police, Califf allegedly fired several rounds inside the residence at a 47-year-old male relative of the residents, who was doing repairs inside the home at the time. A dog belonging to the relative was shot multiple times while protecting its owner, the news release stated, but is expected to make a full recovery.
