Moderate drought returns to southeastern North Carolina

Drought has returned to North Carolina for the first time in more than a year. Drought has returned to North Carolina for the first time in more than a year. The North Carolina Drought Management Advisory Council (DMAC) has identified areas in 12 counties as currently experiencing moderate drought, due to an extended period of below-normal rainfall. The moderate drought conditions are mostly being seen in the southeastern parts of the state, impacting New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender counties; among others. Meanwhile, 38 additional counties in eastern and central North Carolina are also experiencing abnormally dry conditions, and could reach drought status if dry conditions persist.
