Morikawa claims British Open title for second major
July 19, 2021
SANDWICH, United Kingdom: Collin Morikawa won the British Open at Royal St. George’s on Sunday as the American became the first player to win two different majors on debut.
Morikawa, the 2020 US PGA champion, won by two shots from compatriot Jordan Spieth, who lifted the Claret Jug in 2017.
The 24-year-old Morikawa started the day one shot behind overnight leader Louis Oosthuizen but surged ahead with a run of three consecutive birdies on the seventh, eighth and ninth holes before finishing on 15 under par.
Oosthuizen’s bogey at the fourth allowed Morikawa to take lead on 11 under.

Final-round report: Morikawa makes more history
Collin Morikawa matched Tiger Woods in winning two majors before his 25th birthday as he fended off Jordan Spieth to win the 149th Open Championship.
Morikawa carded a bogey-free, four-under par round of 66 to make his Open debut a winning one, in turn becoming the first man in history to win both this and the PGA Championship at the first attempt.
Victory here was all the more impressive given that he d struggled in the previous week s Scottish Open, but a tweak to his equipment set him on course to defy a difficult draw and ultimately win with something to spare.

The Open diary: The wait goes on for an English winner following Tony Jacklin s win at Royal Lytham in 1969 The wait goes on. And, no, we’re not talking about the golf writers hanging around for the media centre shuttle bus. England hasn’t toasted an English winner of The Open on English soil since Tony Jacklin won at Royal Lytham back in 1969. “What a corker,” cried the celebrated commentator Henry Longhurst at the time as Jacklin ripped a pearler out of the screws with his rousing final tee-shot.
