Calgary weather for Thursday, May 6

CALGARY Our upper high pressure is still in the mix for today and tomorrow, with wind growing strong out of the south thanks to the next phase of weather development here in Alberta. We ll transition between an upper trough that s pushing on BC tomorrow, from which a zone of uplift (air rising from the low west of us to the high moving east of us) will trigger multiple bouts of showers as it swirls through our area over the course of the weekend. There are two triggers for wind: changes in temperature, and changes in pressure. Today, that application will help deliver 50 km/h gusts from the southeast, as this low starts to turn in and push out our high.

Rural Mental Health Project a community-based approach

Rural Mental Health Project a community-based approach Poll Yes In 2020, the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) initiated the Rural Mental Health Project as a way for rural communities in Alberta to address mental health issues and areas of concern which needs specific attention. Instead of the provincial body of CMHA doing a top-down method of solutions, those in the specific communities are addressing the problems themselves. Jessica Turowski, Rural Mental Health Project Manager says it has been interesting to see how the groups have developed throughout Alberta. The idea is to have group leaders or what is referred to as animators organize a community networks that addresses certain pertinent issues for that community. For some it is youth or seniors’bullying, some has to to do with isolation, perhaps it is suicide. These animators then develop an action plan to best address these issues with the group and take appropriate action such as setting up a communications

On The Road with Mike Drew: Life begins anew on scorched earth

Article content The ants were definitely in my pants. And my shirt. And my hair. And crawling across my camera. It was totally my fault, of course. I was lying on the ground right beside their burned-out nest and interrupting their rebuilding project so, naturally, they’d want me out of the way. We apologize, but this video has failed to load. Try refreshing your browser, or On The Road with Mike Drew: Life begins anew on scorched earth Back to video I’d been planning to explore the area affected by the big prairie fire that roared across the countryside between Stavely and Claresholm back in March ever since it happened. Pushed by ferocious winds, the fire and several other blazes that same day spread rapidly eastward and burned across fields and pastures left bare by the springtime-melted snow cover, igniting fence lines and power poles, treed wind breaks and farm buildings as it tore along.

Inspired by Alex: Southern Alberta mom runs marathon to raise money for rare disease

FORT MACLEOD, ALTA. Crystal Olive ran 42 kilometers from Fort Macleod to Claresholm Thursday as part of an event to raise awareness and funds for the A-T Children’s Project, an organization dedicated to finding a cure for a rare disease called ataxia telangiectasia. Crystal’s son Alex, who turned 11 in March, was diagnosed with A-T when he was around two years old.  A-T is a progressive and degenerative disease that attacks children, affecting coordination, causing immune deficiencies and leading to high rates of cancer. The same disease led to the death of a second cousin, Randy Van Hierden in 2004, at the age of 20. Randy’s parents Conrad and Rhonda Van Hierden began organizing an annual walk for A-T research in 1998, and the family continues to work tirelessly to increase awareness and raise money for the cause.
